2024 in Review: A Year of Growth and Transformation
As we prepare to head into a new year, we reflect on the growth, transformation, and exciting announcements that took place this past year. From changes in leadership to new flight routes and trade expansion opportunities, RFD has made great strides in business expansion, community development, and economic growth. Let’s take a closer look at the highlights of 2024.
Zack Oakley Appointed Executive Director
The start of the year brought with it a notable leadership change. In January, Zack Oakley was appointed executive director of RFD, marking a new chapter for the organization. Oakley stepped up to his role with grace and has guided RFD toward new business opportunities, enhanced community impact, and continued success. Right off the bat, Oakley engaged with local community members, met with industry stakeholders and administered community presentations. From the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce Leadership Rockford program to the Kiwanis Club of Rockford and the Northwest Alliance of Realtors, Oakley has presented to numerous community groups and organizations to talk about RFD and the impact it’s having on local and global economies.
Oakley’s dedication to strengthening RFD’s connection with the community and improving services has been the cornerstone of progress in 2024.
Passenger Progress
- New Flight Routes: Nashville and Los Angeles Announced: One of the most exciting airport developments of 2024 was the launch of new flight routes. In May, RFD, in partnership with Allegiant, introduced direct flights to Nashville and Los Angeles, offering more options for travelers. The new flights were met with great enthusiasm, leading to a successful season. Due to the positive feedback and strong demand, RFD announced the return of these flights in November. The Allegiant flights will resume in May 2025, offering more opportunities for travelers to explore Nashville and Los Angeles.
- International Flights: In partnership with Apple Vacations, RFD announced exciting new international destinations, including Cancun/Riviera Maya, Mexico; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and Costa Rica. Bookings for these flights have been available in 2024, with departures kicking off in January 2025. Through Apple Vacations, travelers can book complete vacation packages that include flights, hotels, transfers, and more, making it easier than ever to plan a dream getaway.
Cargo Progress
- New Pharmaceutical Trade Lane with India Launched: In September, RFD announced the launch of a new trade lane with India, focusing on pharmaceutical shipments, further strengthening its position in international trade. RFD participated in a successful trial shipment of pharmaceuticals, demonstrating its ability and expertise in properly shipping and handling sensitive goods. The new pharmaceutical trade lane ensures the efficient transportation of essential medical goods through lower costs and risks for clients, and a reduction of Co2 emissions, reinforcing RFD’s growing role in global logistics and trade.
- UPS Cargo Growth: RFD is proud to be home of the second-largest UPS hub in North America. In 2024, UPS celebrated its 30th anniversary at RFD and contributed significantly to RFD’s cargo growth. In April, UPS was awarded a significant air cargo contract by the United States Postal Service (USPS), making UPS the primary air cargo provider for USPS and responsible for moving the majority of its air cargo in the U.S. As a result of the contract, RFD experienced an 18% increase in landed weight from September to November, and cargo numbers are expected to continue soaring through the end of the year and into 2025 and beyond.
- Partnership with Scotland: In November, RFD announced a partnership with Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) to boost cargo flights and strengthen trade between the U.S. and the UK. The collaboration aims to enhance air cargo routes, focusing on aerospace goods like engines and spares, while also supporting industries such as automotive, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce. The flights have 24/7 service and no curfews, aiming to improve efficiency and sustainability, reduce costs, and increase trade. Currently handling over 26,000 tons of cargo annually, this partnership is expected to drive significant growth in both regions.
With new leadership at the helm, the launch of new flight routes, and the establishment of international partnerships, RFD has further solidified its position as a key player in the regional and global markets. From expanding passenger services with direct flights to Nashville and Los Angeles, to opening new trade lanes and strengthening cargo operations, RFD is poised for continued success. As we look ahead to 2025, we are excited for the future – further expansion, new opportunities, and continued progress.
