Celebrating 2025: Milestones, Momentum, and Community at RFD
In 2025, Chicago Rockford International Airport delivered a year worth celebrating, starting with record high passenger numbers that reflect growing demand for convenient travel in our region. We also continued strengthening our role in air cargo, moving up in the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) national rankings. Another major milestone was the announcement and launch of the new American Airlines service operated by Landline, giving travelers a seamless connection through Chicago O’Hare and access to 350+ destinations worldwide. The year was capped with statewide recognition as Illinois’ Primary Airport of the Year, and it closed on a high note with the 78th annual Toys for Tots event, a tradition that continues to make a difference close to home.
Record High Passenger Numbers
RFD broke a record in 2025 serving more than 310,000 passengers, reflecting growing demand for accessible and easy travel options in our region. That momentum was supported by expanded connectivity, including the new American Airlines service operated by Landline, which gives travelers one seamless connection through Chicago O’Hare. Continued service from Allegiant also played a key role, providing steady, affordable options that keep passengers choosing RFD. Interest was further driven by leisure travel, with nonstop Apple Vacations destinations from RFD including international destinations like Cancun and Riviera Maya, Mexico, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic helping reinforce RFD as a reliable, efficient place to start a trip and setting the stage for continued investment in passenger service and future destinations.
RFD Climbs in FAA Cargo Rankings
In 2025, the FAA data showed RFD cargo operations continuing to climb nationally. The airport handled more 3.4 billion pounds of landed weight in 2025, a 9.25 percent increase over 2024. Partnerships continue to be a key avenue supporting that growth. In October, RFD signed a sister airport agreement with Liege Airport (LGG) in Belgium focused on strengthening transatlantic cargo collaboration through increased freight traffic, joint marketing and operational innovation. That step forward reflects the consistency of our carrier partners and reinforces RFD’s role as a major logistics hub for the Midwest – and the world.
American Airlines Landline Service Launch
In July, RFD announced a new partnership with American Airlines and Landline that lets travelers start their trip in Rockford, check bags and clear TSA at RFD, then connect airside at Chicago O’Hare for access to more than 350 destinations. On October 20, 2025, RFD marked inaugural day as the service officially launched, delivering a single-itinerary experience that replaces the usual transfer with a premium motorcoach ride to ORD that includes Wi-Fi, power at every seat, leather seating, and complimentary entertainment. Early demand was strong, with ticket sales tracking at about 95 per day.
Airport of the Year
On September 29, 2025, RFD was named Illinois’ Primary Airport of the Year by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics. Presented at the Illinois Public Airports Association fall conference, the award recognized RFD’s strong safety record, operational accomplishments, and contributions to Illinois’ aviation system and economy. It also reflected the airport’s ongoing commitment to customer service, facility upkeep, and supporting aviation education across the region.
Toys for Tots Returns
For the 78th year, RFD welcomed the Toys for Tots holiday celebration back to the airport, bringing together the U.S. Marines, volunteers, and community partners for a day built around giving. The event provided new toys or books, along with a message of hope, to military families across Winnebago and Boone counties, with the program serving about 100 children. The event is always memorable, but the real win is seeing local kids and families leave with a little extra joy for the season.
As we look ahead to 2026, the momentum from this past year gives us a clear direction and even more reason to be optimistic. The progress we made in passenger service, cargo performance, and regional connectivity is not happening by accident. It is the result of strong partnerships, a team that takes pride in doing things the right way, and a community that continues to show up for its airport. We are ready to build on these wins, keep improving the travel experience, and continue delivering the kind of impact that reaches well beyond the airfield.
